Guest Post by Quinn Loftis

Published March 24, 2013 by crysbookreviews

I was lucky enough to be a part of the Fate and Fury tour for the Grey Wolves series by Quinn Loftis, which is a great series so far. I asked her to do a character building guest post because I know how much you all love to hear about that from the author. This is what she had to say:

The three best friends in the Grey Wolves are loosely based off of some of my closest girlfriends from high school. I don’t really know how that came about but as I wrote their characters they just sort of evolved into those personalities. I took the closeness that I had with them in high school and wrote it into Jacque, Jen and Sally’s relationship. I wanted girls to see that you could and should have close girlfriends even when you have a strong relationship with your boyfriend.

The guys were actually more difficult to write because I wanted to make sure that I wrote characters that complimented the girls well. I wanted the guys to have strengths where the girls were weak and wanted the girls to be strong where the guys were weak. I wanted their personalities to complement each other but also to create a little friction between them as well.

How great is that?! I definitely recommend that you guys go out and get ALL the books that are out for it now. Seriously..go like right now.

Excerpt:
Jen looked down at the dirt where she had been tracing with her finger and her eyes filled with tears as she saw she had drawn the markings that covered Decebel’s skin.
She turned away from the drawing to face Jacque and took her hand. She held it between her own, rubbing it, probably more for her comfort than Jacque’s. She looked at her red headed friend and her heart ached to see her in such a helpless state. She stared pushing her will at Jacque as if that would be enough to make her open her eyes. If Fane were here he would be going crazy; but he wasn’t. None of their mates were, and for the first time she felt alone. She needed Decebel, no matter how much it bothered her to need him, she did. She needed his strength and his comfort. She needed his brooding presence so that she would have someone to be sarcastic with and know he would be able to take it. She needed to hear him tell her she would be okay, their baby would be okay. She needed him to tell her when she needed to shut the hell up, because as her fear rose so did her sarcasm and irritability and she knew none of the others needed that nor deserved it.
“Damn you Desdemona for taking him from me,” she muttered into the cold, dark night. Her eyes narrowed and she looked out into the forest, wishing that the witch would come walking out in all her evil glory. Jen never though she was capable of being cruel, but she decided then and there that she would peel the flesh from Desdemona’s writhing body while she still lived. Was she a little blood thirsty? Maybe, but then the witch had taken her mate, putting him in danger and causing him immeasurable suffering; for that alone she had signed her death warrant, not to mention all the other atrocities she had already committed in her long, meaningless life.
“Jacque where are you?” She asked her friend. “I want you to know that I will take care of you, always Jac. And I’m going to give you hell for lying there on your back while we do all the work.” Jen snorted out laughter to herself as she thought of the remark Jacque would give her to that comment.
Her heart sunk as she continued to watch the steady breathing of Jacque, but no other life was apparent in her. She wanted to run. She wanted to shed the human skin and let her wolf run free, howling at the pain that she felt for the loss of everything. Jen missed her parents and she smiled to herself thinking it was a feeling she had never thought to feel. But when she stood to lose something that she never imagined loosing, she admitted that she didn’t want to lose them, no matter how tense their relationship had always been.
She continued to sit staring into the night, a lone sentry guarding her friends. Part of her was eager to go to sleep hoping to hear from her mate again, but another part of her dreaded hearing the desperation in his usually calm, secure voice. He needed her just as badly as she needed him and here she sat unable to do a damn thing for him. She growled in frustration and gradually all the ugliness of her reality set in and took root in her heart. She bowed her head and closed her eyes giving into the monster of defeat, if only for a little while, she would let herself be weak, let herself fall apart while there was no one to watch.

Title: Pity Isn’t An Option
Author: Jessica Brooks
2013, Createspace
Goodreads
Amazon | Smashwords
Synopsis:
Seventeen year-old Jonas Norton is trying to come to terms with what his blood disorder has robbed from him, including his two most favorite things: basketball, and competing in Hatchet Racket, Wanless’ annual hatchet-throwing contest. The facts that his father works constantly to pay for his blood tests and Jonas can actually see the disappointment in his eyes for being such a failure only make matters worse. And even worse than all of that? Jonas’ own twin brother, Micah, is perfectly healthy and becoming quite the basketball player. Also, Hattie, the girl Jonas has loved for forever? She has no idea how he feels.
Sixteen year-old Hattie Akerman lives down the hill from Jonas. Though her father, Heath, tries to hide his lack of mental clarity behind the bottle and she’s pretty much given up on having any kind of relationship with him, she would still rather her younger sister, Lucy, not have to deal with the consequences of his behavior. Hattie helps her mother by baking food to sell at Market and looking out for Lucy. No matter what the rest of the town says about her crazy father, Jonas sticks up for them. He is, by far, her very best friend.
As if things aren’t complicated enough already, Heath and Micah are unexpectedly drafted into President Kendrick’s army (an army from which no one ever returns) just days before Thanksgiving. When Heath disappears instead of arriving at the Meeting Place to check in, Hattie and Jonas decide they’ve had enough, and take matters into their own hands. And though nothing could have prepared them for what happens next, Hattie and Jonas learn that hope can be seen in every situation. You just have to know where to look.

Excerpt 4
Suddenly, there are gasps all around me. Assuming someone in the Union is going crazy again and a tree is about to fall from the sky, I brace myself, and look around.
People are pointing somewhere off in the distance. Within seconds, I hear sirens.
Nothing good ever comes out of a draft. It only brings the bad. People pass out, parents try to fight the officers who are delivering the news about their precious children, some beg to take their place, others get sick—all are natural reactions. About two years ago, it just turned into one of those automatic things—if someone was drafted, then along came the ambulances. It’s the one time those who don’t have Kendrick’s insurance are allowed medical help. Just shows how sick he is.
“It almost sounds as if they’re going—” Jonas stops and looks at me. He doesn’t have to finish. –Hattie

He was taking the long road. She was taking the road to nowhere. It just so happened that they led to the same place…

Five months ago, Camryn and Andrew, both dealing with personal hardships, met on a Greyhound bus. They fell in love and proved that when two people are meant to be together, fate will find a way to make it happen.

Now, in the highly anticipated sequel to THE EDGE OF NEVER, Camryn and Andrew are pursuing their love for music and living life to the fullest as they always swore to do. But when tragedy befalls them, their relationship is put to the ultimate test.

As Camryn tries to numb her pain, Andrew makes a bold decision: To get their life back on track, they’ll set out on another cross-country road trip. Together they find excitement, passion, adventure—and challenges they never could have anticipated.

Sexy. Daring. Dangerous. THE EDGE OF ALWAYS takes you on a ride you won’t forget .

THE EDGE OF ALWAYS Excerpt

Camryn shrieks and I start laughing as we dash away from the cows and toward the car.

Awww, shiiiit!” I yell when I step in a huge pile of it.

Camryn cackles with laughter and we both practically stumble the rest of the way through the field, me trying to scrape the shit off the bottom of my shoe while running at the same time and Camryn’s flip-flops getting caught on the ground trying to keep up with her feet.

I can’t believe that just happened!” Camryn laughs as we finally make it back to the car. She arches her body over forward and props her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath.

I’m out of breath, too, but I still relentlessly scrape the bottom of my shoe on the asphalt. “Dammit!” I say, rubbing my foot back and forth.

Camryn jumps up on the hood of the car, letting her legs hang over the front. “Can we finally say that we did it?” she asks with laughter in her voice.

I stand still finally and catch my breath. I look at her, at how beautiful and bright that smile of hers is and I say, “Yeah, babe, I think we can safely mark it off our list.”

Good!” she says.

Then she points behind me. “Do it on the grass,” she says with one side of her mouth pinched into a hard line. “You’re just spreading it around doing it like that.”

I hop over into the grass and start rubbing my foot back and forth again. “Since when did you become an expert on shit?”

Better watch your mouth,” she warns, getting into the driver’s seat.

What are you going to do?” I taunt her.

She starts the Chevelle and revs the engine a few times pressing on the gas. There’s a cruel gleam in her eyes. She props her left arm across the top of the open window and next thing I know she’s driving slowly past me.

I give her the warning eye, but her grin just gets bigger.

I know you won’t leave me here!” I shout as she goes past me.

Surely she wouldn’t….

She gets farther away and at first I call her bluff and just stand here, watching her get smaller and smaller…

Finally, I take off running after the car.

Excerpt #3

“It’s a simple drop, babe. We aren’t going to rob a bank,” he replied in his mixture of an Irish and Bostonian accent.

“Then you don’t mind if I go?” I inquired as I stared into his crystal blue eyes.

“Absolutely fucking not. We aren’t dealin’ with the Irish tonight—we got some Haitians to hook up and I don’t trust ‘em as far as I can throw them. You stay here with Lita.”

I shook my head slowly. “Finn, if you want me, if I am gonna be your girl then I have to know everything that is going on and that means going out on drops with you two. I’m not some vestal virgin so don’t treat me like one.”

He set his mug down on the kitchen counter and grabbed me by the arms. “Babe, this is no joke. I don’t want anything to happen to you and if they hurt one hair on your head, I’d fucking kill ‘em all and gladly serve the time at Cedar Junction.”

“I’m not staying here with that Oxyball head. I’m going whether you want me to or not,” I said out loud with fierce determination.

“That’s my girl.” Finn wrapped his arms around my waist. “Are you sure you’re okay? Is there anything you wanna talk about?”

I didn’t know whether we should talk about it so soon. I wasn’t even sure I had accepted the situation and it was best to just forget about the whole situation but something nagged at my gut and wouldn’t allow me to let go.

“If we are going to talk, I’d rather we do it in private,” I whispered to him.

He nodded his head and we walked outside to the backyard where there was a neatly trimmed lawn with two comfortable, cloth sun loungers. He sat down on one before he pulled me into his lap. Once he laid out, I got more comfortable and put my head on his chest.

“What happened when you went to visit your grandparents’?” he inquired, his voice deep yet soothing.

“I ran into Patrick and Clara. They had Kieran with them and nearly had a shit fit because I had shown up. Then, if my visit couldn’t get any crappier, Fiona and Chloe pay a visit after all night clubbin’ and I find out about this new business partner of yours…Brandon…isn’t that his name?”

“Yeah and he’s totally cool people. Dylan is a bit weary of him but he’s completely professional. He’s on the straight and narrow—doesn’t drink, smoke or do any kind of drugs. His mother was a big time strawberry back in Ireland…that’s how she got him. She ran away to London for a while and got caught up with a big time pimp. He had her on the streets hookin’ and he was usin’ her as well. It’s lucky Brandon is okay outside of a few anger issues he can suffer from. She used drugs and drank like a fish the whole time she was pregnant with him,” Finn explained.

“I guess that explains the mark on Fiona’s arm. She said Brandon did it.”

“Brandon didn’t hit Fiona. He loves that bitch though I don’t know why…well, actually I do. She could be a dead-ringer for his mum if she had taken care of herself and hadn’t allowed her life to get out of her control. Fiona has an issue of being faithful and chances are she fucked some random guy at a club and he roughed her up a bit. The only thing she is good at is having them wear condoms. Last thing she wants to do is bring something home to Brandon.”

“I don’t know,” I began, “Patrick and Clara were just so mean. They didn’t want me to spend any extra time with Kieran and they acted totally strange. I think they honestly thought I was going to pick him up and walk out of the house with him but why would I do that? How much sense does that make when I am in college and he’s our secret? You know how much trouble I would get in if any of those tabloids ever found out the truth? Athena Donahue’s daughter knocked up at fifteen and gives birth to a secret baby?”

“And with someone like me? Basically an Irish gangster who is no better than a drug dealer. Yeah, that is enough to ruin someone’s career. All I know is there was a serious issue that happened with Kieran when he was a baby. This is all passed along the grapevine shit because I wasn’t here but since then, they have been ultra protective of him. They left the state, settled in New Haven, and make it their business to visit this place as little as possible. Basically, they come enough to keep up appearances and that is it.”

I sat up and stared into his gorgeous crystal blue eyes. “Is this what Dylan told you?”

“Yes, and no. Fiona told me a bit and so did Chloe because she was around at the time. I seriously don’t think they see you as a threat. At least they shouldn’t because of who you are and who would you say the child belonged to? Plus, just like you indicated, you’re in college so what the hell are you going to do with a four-year-old kid?”

I wanted to get off this topic as soon as possible. “About this drop tonight, tell me how a typical one goes and what I should expect? Will you and Dylan allow me to take a weapon?”

I looked down to where Brad’s gaze had been focused, down, down, in the murky water towards the center of the pond. No. Noooo! I shouldn’t be able to see him through the stirred-up sediment, but I did. Pascual was drowning Aden just as he had drowned Brad.”

One night changed Kasey’s life forever. The star football player drowned and everyone at school blames her. And oh, yeah, since that night, she can see ghosts. Not that she’s afraid of them. Much. Opal

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-1

Ah I had to read this book twice and the last 15 pages like 4 times. Why? Because it was heartbreaking. I loved Daemon in Obsidian and Onyx but there was just something about the way he was with Katy and how he treated her. I know a lot of people were like “Just say it back to her!” But I felt he did more than enough to show how much he cared about her. You know what they say ‘actions speak louder then words’. Well I believe that. This book picked up exactly where Onyx ended. Which left me with anger issues toward Blake.

Okay I totally wanted to punch him in the face multiple times because lets face it. He had quite a few moments of crazy showing through. Like showing back up at school like he didn’t kill anyone. I won’t say who in case you haven’t read Onyx. Now back to Katy, wow did she have to go through so much in this book. She had to deal with the fallout of what happened with Will, had to deal with another hybrid like her that was close to her but not stable, she had to deal with losing her best friend, Dee because of decisions she made, she had to come to terms with her relationship with Daemon. Honestly I thought she grew up quite a bit in the book and I loved how much stronger as a character she is now and how I know that she will be even better in the next book.

Now the ending, oh god the ending. I think I cried EVERY SINGLE TIME I read it. To get so close to getting what they were trying for and then to get stuck behind like that? And Daemon fighting everyone to get to her? Yea and not to mention what he said to her right before the door closed. For the first time ever. I almost want the next book to be in both their POV’s only to see what happens to each one and how the cope with that knowledge. I don’t want to give to much away because this series is COMPLETELY worth the read, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to get my hands on Origin when the ARC’s come out. This summer can’t come fast enough for me to read that book.

Wait For You

Synopsis

Some things are worth waiting for…

Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing…

Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet…

But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…

Rock star drummer Bishop Riley doesn’t have a problem. Celebrities—especially ones suffering from anxiety—deserve to party, right? Wrong. After taking a few too many pills, Bishop wakes up in the hospital facing an intervention. If he wants to stay in the band, he’ll have to detox while under house arrest in Seldon, Alaska.

Hockey player Penny Jones can’t imagine a life outside of Seldon. Though she has tons of scholarship offers, the last thing she wants is to leave. Who’ll take care of her absent-minded gramps? Not her mother, who can’t even be bothered with the new tenants next door.

Penny’s too hung up on another guy to deal with Bishop’s crappy attitude, and Bishop’s too busy
sneaking pills to care. Until he starts hanging out with Gramps. If Bishop wants a chance with the fiery girl next door, he’ll have to admit he has a problem and kick it. Too bad addiction is hard to kick…and Bishop’s about to run out of time.
