I was lucky enough to be a part of the Fate and Fury tour for the Grey Wolves series by Quinn Loftis, which is a great series so far. I asked her to do a character building guest post because I know how much you all love to hear about that from the author. This is what she had to say:

The three best friends in the Grey Wolves are loosely based off of some of my closest girlfriends from high school. I don’t really know how that came about but as I wrote their characters they just sort of evolved into those personalities. I took the closeness that I had with them in high school and wrote it into Jacque, Jen and Sally’s relationship. I wanted girls to see that you could and should have close girlfriends even when you have a strong relationship with your boyfriend.

The guys were actually more difficult to write because I wanted to make sure that I wrote characters that complimented the girls well. I wanted the guys to have strengths where the girls were weak and wanted the girls to be strong where the guys were weak. I wanted their personalities to complement each other but also to create a little friction between them as well.

How great is that?! I definitely recommend that you guys go out and get ALL the books that are out for it now. Seriously..go like right now.

Excerpt:
Jen looked down at the dirt where she had been tracing with her finger and her eyes filled with tears as she saw she had drawn the markings that covered Decebel’s skin.
She turned away from the drawing to face Jacque and took her hand. She held it between her own, rubbing it, probably more for her comfort than Jacque’s. She looked at her red headed friend and her heart ached to see her in such a helpless state. She stared pushing her will at Jacque as if that would be enough to make her open her eyes. If Fane were here he would be going crazy; but he wasn’t. None of their mates were, and for the first time she felt alone. She needed Decebel, no matter how much it bothered her to need him, she did. She needed his strength and his comfort. She needed his brooding presence so that she would have someone to be sarcastic with and know he would be able to take it. She needed to hear him tell her she would be okay, their baby would be okay. She needed him to tell her when she needed to shut the hell up, because as her fear rose so did her sarcasm and irritability and she knew none of the others needed that nor deserved it.
“Damn you Desdemona for taking him from me,” she muttered into the cold, dark night. Her eyes narrowed and she looked out into the forest, wishing that the witch would come walking out in all her evil glory. Jen never though she was capable of being cruel, but she decided then and there that she would peel the flesh from Desdemona’s writhing body while she still lived. Was she a little blood thirsty? Maybe, but then the witch had taken her mate, putting him in danger and causing him immeasurable suffering; for that alone she had signed her death warrant, not to mention all the other atrocities she had already committed in her long, meaningless life.
“Jacque where are you?” She asked her friend. “I want you to know that I will take care of you, always Jac. And I’m going to give you hell for lying there on your back while we do all the work.” Jen snorted out laughter to herself as she thought of the remark Jacque would give her to that comment.
Her heart sunk as she continued to watch the steady breathing of Jacque, but no other life was apparent in her. She wanted to run. She wanted to shed the human skin and let her wolf run free, howling at the pain that she felt for the loss of everything. Jen missed her parents and she smiled to herself thinking it was a feeling she had never thought to feel. But when she stood to lose something that she never imagined loosing, she admitted that she didn’t want to lose them, no matter how tense their relationship had always been.
She continued to sit staring into the night, a lone sentry guarding her friends. Part of her was eager to go to sleep hoping to hear from her mate again, but another part of her dreaded hearing the desperation in his usually calm, secure voice. He needed her just as badly as she needed him and here she sat unable to do a damn thing for him. She growled in frustration and gradually all the ugliness of her reality set in and took root in her heart. She bowed her head and closed her eyes giving into the monster of defeat, if only for a little while, she would let herself be weak, let herself fall apart while there was no one to watch.

Title: Pity Isn’t An Option
Author: Jessica Brooks
2013, Createspace
Goodreads
Amazon | Smashwords
Synopsis:
Seventeen year-old Jonas Norton is trying to come to terms with what his blood disorder has robbed from him, including his two most favorite things: basketball, and competing in Hatchet Racket, Wanless’ annual hatchet-throwing contest. The facts that his father works constantly to pay for his blood tests and Jonas can actually see the disappointment in his eyes for being such a failure only make matters worse. And even worse than all of that? Jonas’ own twin brother, Micah, is perfectly healthy and becoming quite the basketball player. Also, Hattie, the girl Jonas has loved for forever? She has no idea how he feels.
Sixteen year-old Hattie Akerman lives down the hill from Jonas. Though her father, Heath, tries to hide his lack of mental clarity behind the bottle and she’s pretty much given up on having any kind of relationship with him, she would still rather her younger sister, Lucy, not have to deal with the consequences of his behavior. Hattie helps her mother by baking food to sell at Market and looking out for Lucy. No matter what the rest of the town says about her crazy father, Jonas sticks up for them. He is, by far, her very best friend.
As if things aren’t complicated enough already, Heath and Micah are unexpectedly drafted into President Kendrick’s army (an army from which no one ever returns) just days before Thanksgiving. When Heath disappears instead of arriving at the Meeting Place to check in, Hattie and Jonas decide they’ve had enough, and take matters into their own hands. And though nothing could have prepared them for what happens next, Hattie and Jonas learn that hope can be seen in every situation. You just have to know where to look.

Excerpt 4
Suddenly, there are gasps all around me. Assuming someone in the Union is going crazy again and a tree is about to fall from the sky, I brace myself, and look around.
People are pointing somewhere off in the distance. Within seconds, I hear sirens.
Nothing good ever comes out of a draft. It only brings the bad. People pass out, parents try to fight the officers who are delivering the news about their precious children, some beg to take their place, others get sick—all are natural reactions. About two years ago, it just turned into one of those automatic things—if someone was drafted, then along came the ambulances. It’s the one time those who don’t have Kendrick’s insurance are allowed medical help. Just shows how sick he is.
“It almost sounds as if they’re going—” Jonas stops and looks at me. He doesn’t have to finish. –Hattie

Opal

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-1

Ah I had to read this book twice and the last 15 pages like 4 times. Why? Because it was heartbreaking. I loved Daemon in Obsidian and Onyx but there was just something about the way he was with Katy and how he treated her. I know a lot of people were like “Just say it back to her!” But I felt he did more than enough to show how much he cared about her. You know what they say ‘actions speak louder then words’. Well I believe that. This book picked up exactly where Onyx ended. Which left me with anger issues toward Blake.

Okay I totally wanted to punch him in the face multiple times because lets face it. He had quite a few moments of crazy showing through. Like showing back up at school like he didn’t kill anyone. I won’t say who in case you haven’t read Onyx. Now back to Katy, wow did she have to go through so much in this book. She had to deal with the fallout of what happened with Will, had to deal with another hybrid like her that was close to her but not stable, she had to deal with losing her best friend, Dee because of decisions she made, she had to come to terms with her relationship with Daemon. Honestly I thought she grew up quite a bit in the book and I loved how much stronger as a character she is now and how I know that she will be even better in the next book.

Now the ending, oh god the ending. I think I cried EVERY SINGLE TIME I read it. To get so close to getting what they were trying for and then to get stuck behind like that? And Daemon fighting everyone to get to her? Yea and not to mention what he said to her right before the door closed. For the first time ever. I almost want the next book to be in both their POV’s only to see what happens to each one and how the cope with that knowledge. I don’t want to give to much away because this series is COMPLETELY worth the read, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to get my hands on Origin when the ARC’s come out. This summer can’t come fast enough for me to read that book.

Synopsis

Some things are worth waiting for…

Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing…

Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet…

But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…

Focus

Freshman year of college is hard even when you’re not tied to the future king of a supernatural society.

Allie dives into college head first with Hailey as her roommate and the city of New Orleans as her backyard. As things within The Society heat up, Allie realizes that whether she’s with Levi or not, she’s in far too deep to turn back.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-1

Now let me tell you so much has happened to poor Allie. But man is she stubborn. I mean really how many times does Levi have to apologize to her about what he did and what happened to her? He was scared to death about what was going to happen to her when she was kidnapped.

This time around though luckily Allie is with Hailey and makes some friends in college. Of course Levi does not allow any guys to go near her and makes a point of having Jared and Owen as her bodyguards. Which was great because you got to see a little more into these two characters. I love the friendship that builds between Allie and Jared, especially since she hasn’t been his biggest fan.

Hailey and Allie go and spend Christmas break with Allie’s mom and Allie’s moms boyfriend. This time Levi doesn’t go with them, even though things have been progressing. It kinda sucked because I wanted her mom to get to know him better and show that he was going to be with Allie no matter what.  I was like “wth” when they got picked up at the airport. I totally thought it was kinda pathetic that he was waiting for her like everything was going to be okay and they would get back together when she blatantly told him multiple times that it wasn’t going to happen.

Not only do we find out that there was someone on the inside that was trying to hurt Allie but we also find out about someone in Allie’s past isn’t who we think he is. I can tell you I was soooooo shocked at the end of this book. It was insane. I am anxious for the next book to come out. Obviously since I have just helped host the cover reveal for the third book. Which I believe is the last and I will be sorry to see go. But I got it in the end. Really I did. I hope you all read this book too. It is definitely worth it.

Excerpt 1

“Don’t you dare.” I grabbed his arm, pulling him backwards. His eyes darted to where my hand rested on him. I didn’t move my hand, I couldn’t physically bring myself to break the contact; all of a sudden there were no smiles, no jokes, just him and me and our space on the couch. I could only hear the music and be aware of the heat of his skin and the rapid rise and fall of my chest in this moment.

The only thing that snapped me out of my daze was Toby’s words which seemed low and raspy.

“Is Adam your boyfriend?” His gaze flicked over my face as he waited for my answer. My mouth gaped open; I couldn’t hide the fact I was dumbfounded by the question.

I blinked quickly and took my hand from his arm. I struggled to construct a legible sentence.

“Oh – um, no, we’re just friends, it’s not like that.”

His stony expression didn’t falter, didn’t reveal any kind of emotion. He was so hard to read, and I wanted to read him so badly. He gave a small nod and handed me the CD cover.

“Better go and make sure these guys aren’t cheating.” And without another word, he got up and headed towards the pool table.

Excerpt 2

Moon rays filtered through the windshield, giving the cabin an otherworldly glow.

Toby’s perfect teeth were illuminated when he smiled. “You know, you are the worst winner!” He shook his head. “Ever since you won the bet, you’ve been apologising. Just go with it, enjoy it, because I assure you, next time …” – he leaned closer – “… you will not be the winner.” He pulled back, smug.

I curved a brow. “Next time?”

He nodded. “I fully intend to redeem myself.”

“Want a chance to rebuild your shattered ego, do you? I bet you’re itching to fix my bike so you can be rid of me once and for all.” I shouldered him gently, teasing him as I would Adam. And then I realised what I had done; I had treated him like my friends. He looked down at his shoulder, then up at me. His eyes shadowed with untold meanings that I couldn’t read.

“What if I didn’t want to fix your bike?” he said in all seriousness.

“Why, is my company so stimulating that you can’t bear the thought of being without me?” I teased nervously.

I was aiming for light and airy, but something must have gone wrong with my delivery because Toby’s face went blank. He looked out into the lights of Onslow, ran his tongue over his bottom lip and sighed.

Excerpt 3

As the engine churned dark water into white froth behind us, I thought about what we were about to do. I was about to embark on a day on the lake with Toby Morrison. If anyone had told me last week this was how I’d be spending my summer, I would have never believed them.

“Where to?” called Toby over the hum of the motor.

“McLean’s?” posed Sean.

“Too busy,” Ellie yelled.

“How about over Horseshoe Bend? Pretty secluded there,” I suggested.

Sean smiled wickedly as he moved to sit beside Toby. “You want somewhere private, do you, Tess? What do YOU have planned for the day?”

I blushed, horrified at what he thought I was suggesting.

“I just meant …”

“You heard the lady, Tobias, drive her around the bend.”

Walking Disaster

Walking Disaster is Travis’ POV.

How much is too much to love?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. Just when he thought he was invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Jamie McGuire’s New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes. goodreads-badge-add-plus-1

WHY I AM WAITING FOR IT:

Seriously 2 words…TRAVIS MADDOX! That is all I have to say to that.

Mo Fitzgerald has made her choice: A life in Chicago. A future with Colin. To leave behind the enigmatic Luc and the world of the Arcs. But the more she struggles to keep her magic and mortal lives separate, the deadlier the consequences. In the end, Mo must risk everything–her life, her heart, her future–or lose it all.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-1

I honestly didn’t think this book could be any better then the last one. Boy, was I wrong. Mo had so many decisions that affected everyone’s lives, hers, Lucs, Colins, Constance, her mom, dad and uncle. I honestly was hoping  for Luc to be the guy she ends up with. I mean really I have managed to be Team Luc throughout the books, I wasn’t stopping now. I was really worried about how Erica was going to end the trilogy. She definitely didn’t disappoint me.

I don’t even know where to start on on how I felt about this book. Honestly, my emotions were everywhere. It has been a while since I read theses books, but I still remember hoping for a specific ending and for crying and laughing at certain points of the book. I won’t tell you what ending I hoped for, you already know who I wanted her to end up with. Which is more then enough information until you read these awesome books.

Everything comes to a head when Mo has to decide which life and which guy she wants with no uncertainty. She wanted to go to New York before everything started, could she go there? If so with what guy? She could stay in Chicago with Colin or go to New Orleans with Luc. She really had to work through what she wanted and it was great to see her become the person she was always meant to be. With no doubts, because honestly she has doubted herself since day 1.

I almost wished for a 4th book that was later down the road, but honestly Erica ended it perfectly I think. I couldn’t get enough of it.

Tangled by Erica O’Rourke (Torn Trilogy #2)

Published January 7, 2013 by crysbookreviews

Tangled

Constance started to keen as the air around us began to thrash and twist, the caustic scent of ozone burning my nose. As I watched, her dark gold hair began to lift and kink into knots.

“I’m here. It’ll be okay.” It was the last thing I said before my best friend’s little sister went supernova in the second-floor girls’ bathroom, taking me with her.

A month ago, Mo Fitzgerald risked her life to stop an ancient prophecy and avenge her best friend’s murder. Now, she only wants to keep her loved ones safe. But the magic—and the Chicago Mob—have other plans.

Mysterious, green-eyed Luc is back, asking for help—and a second chance. Colin, her strongest protector, is hiding a shocking secret. And inside Constance, the magic is about to go terribly wrong. Tangled in a web of love and betrayal, Mo must choose between the life she’s dreamed of and the one she’s destined for.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-1

Oh wow what a sequel! Erica did a great job with this book. I loved the drama between Mo and Constance. I get why Constance was so angry, I mean who wouldn’t be angry about losing family members all over the place. I get why she treats Mo the way she does but I don’t think Mo deserves it at all.

Oh lord I am still Team Luc although Colin definitely had his moments that were sweet and had me wavering a little bit on whose side I would want Mo to be on. There was just something more between Mo and Luc then there was for Mo and Colin. Of course Colin seemed more good then bad even with his affiliation with her uncle. He definitely had his reasons for working for her uncle. Still I really didn’t think they were worth it too much. I mean they were admirable but I wouldn’t do a life debt with a man like that.

This time there was a lot of drama about the magic. Who knew that when trying to fix it, Mo and Luc would accidentally mess it up even more. I felt so bad for her because of the more guilt that she had on her because of everything. She never seemed to catch a break. This trilogy really surprised me so much. I am not going to give away anything but I definitely recommend reading these books by Erica.
